It's Monday and I want to help you out by not falling behind with your endless task of projects this week. I'm going to share two golden tips for defeating procrastination.
Let's start by getting the facts out the way, as humans are designed to avoid discomfort. We've heard many times that growth only happens outside of the comfort zone. If we all know that then why are so many of us are still puzzled about how to win that battle? For many of us, myself included, procrastination is one of the largest battles that I face. Here are some ways I procrastinate:
- Binge-watching Dragon Ball Z
- Scrolling through social media
- Reading through emails I KNOW that are irrelevant
- Playing Worlde, Quardle, and Nerdle
- Playing video games
The unfortunate side of all of this entertainment (minus the emails) is that we don't realize that this procrastination is costing us our productivity. Having a sense of urgency is the first step to increasing your productivity. Imagine this...You're walking your dog and they stop to look at something on the side of the road, meanwhile, you keep walking and now you're struggling attempting to continue moving forward because your dog (procrastination) found something shiny on the ground. However, the split-second your dog catches a whiff of their favorite treat in front of them they take off running. You need to find a favorite treat to get you going. What reward will motivate you for getting your work done?
Once you have your reward figured out, the second step to defeating your procrastination is having a clear goal in mind. Sometimes, we procrastinate because we don't truly understand what we are attempting to accomplish. How many times have you started a project and you stared at a blank canvas for minutes or even hours? I bet more than you can count. Here's the quickest solution to that problem. Ask more questions. Whether you have to ask your manager or you have to ask yourself twenty times what is your desired outcome for this project, the more you ask, the more details you will gain. Once you gain enough details you can put pen to paper to start your production workflow.
I hope these simple tips can be implemented immediately for you so you can get your to-do list knocked out!
